Het seizoen 2002/2003 was het 41ste seizoen van de Rotterdamse betaaldvoetbalclub SBV Excelsior sinds de invoering van het betaald voetbal in 1954. De club degradeerde in dit seizoen uit de Eredivisie.

Hoofdcoach was Adrie Koster, die bezig was aan zijn zesde en laatste seizoen in Kralingen. Hij werd opgevolgd door Henk van Stee. Onder leiding van Koster eindigde Excelsior op de zeventiende en voorlaatste plaats in de eindrangschikking, waarna de ploeg veroordeeld was tot de nacompetitie. Daarin legde Excelsior het af tegen FC Volendam en FC Emmen. De ploeg eindigde als derde in groep B en degradeerde uit de Eredivisie. Heracles Almelo werd laatste in de poule.

In het bekertoernooi verloor Excelsior in de kwartfinale van FC Utrecht (1-3), nadat in de eerste drie ronden was afgerekend met achtereenvolgens FC Dordrecht (1-0), Sparta Rotterdam (4-2) en Jong Ajax (4-2). Topscorer werd aanvaller Saïd Boutahar met 9 treffers in 30 competitieduels.

Koster moest na afloop van het seizoen vertrekken bij Excelsior. De trainer werd verantwoordelijk gehouden voor de tegenvallende resultaten van na de winterstop. De promovendus begon nog alleszins redelijk aan het seizoen, maar belandde na de jaarwisseling in een vrije val. Na de winterstop werd alleen nog van sc Heerenveen gewonnen. Ook in de nacompetitie begon de ploeg desastreus: met louter nederlagen in de eerste drie duels stond de degradatie vrijwel vast.
