Attacus is een geslacht van vlinders uit de familie van de nachtpauwogen (Saturniidae). De wetenschappelijke naam van het geslacht werd in 1767 door Carl Linnaeus gepubliceerd als naam voor een ondergeslacht van Phalaena. (1767). Systema naturae ed. 12, 1(2): 808 In 1819 waardeerde Jacob Hübner het ondergeslacht op tot zelfstandig geslacht. (1819). Verzeichniss bekannter Schmetterlinge 10: 155 (1886). in: Biologia Centrali-Americana – Insecta, Lepidoptera, Heterocera 1: 189 De typesoort van het geslacht is Phalaena atlas , 1758.
De soorten van dit geslacht komen voor in het Oriëntaals gebied en het Australaziatisch gebied. De vleugelspanwijdte kan oplopen tot wel 25 centimeter, hoewel het lichaam zelf relatief klein is.
