Ophiochondrus is een geslacht van slangsterren uit de familie Ophiacanthidae. De wetenschappelijke naam van het geslacht werd in 1869 voorgesteld door Theodore Lyman. (1869). Preliminary report on the Ophiuridae and Astrophytidae dredged in deep water between Cuba and Florida Reef. Bulletin of the Museum of Comparative Zoölogy at Harvard College 1(10): 327 In de protoloog plaatste Lyman slechts de soort Ophiochondrus convolutus in het geslacht, waarmee die automatisch de typesoort werd.
