De belangrijkste bathymetrische kenmerken van dit gebied zijn: de vulkanische boog van de Kleine Antillen; de oude inactieve vulkanische boog van de Grote Antillen (Maagdeneilanden, Puerto Rico en Hispaniola); de Muertostrog; en de Puerto Ricotrog gevormd in de grenszone tussen de Caribische en de schuin subducerende Noord-Amerikaanse Plaat. Verticale overdrijving is 5:1. De Anguillabank is een vulkanische boog van de Kleine Antillen in de Caraïben die de oostelijke grens vormt van de Caribische Plaat. Het maakt deel uit van een subductiezone, ook bekend als de subductiezone van de Kleine Antillen, waar de oceanische korst van de Noord-Amerikaanse Plaat onder de Caribische Plaat wordt gesubduceerd. Dit subductieproces vormde een aantal vulkanische eilanden, van de Maagdeneilanden in het noorden tot de eilanden voor de kust van Venezuela in het zuiden. De vulkanische boog van de Kleine Antillen omvat 21 'actieve' vulkanen, met name Soufrière op Montserrat; Mount Pelée op Martinique; La Grande Soufrière op Guadeloupe; Soufrière op Saint Vincent; Mount Scenery op Saba; en de onderzeese vulkaan Kick 'em Jenny die ongeveer tien kilometer ten noorden van Grenada ligt.
