Palaemonella is een geslacht van garnalen uit de familie van de steurgarnalen (Palaemonidae). De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1852 door James Dwight Dana. "Conspectus of the Crustacea of the exploring expedition under Capt. C. Wilkes, U.S.N. Macroura." Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (1852), vol. 6, blz. 17 Dana beschreef in die publicatie ook de eerste soorten van het geslacht, Palaemonella tenuipes (de typesoort) en Palaemonella orientalis, die later de nieuwe combinatie Vir orientalis kreeg.
