New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute (NZMACI).
Tahi a te tiki, kotahi a te wānanga
He pou maumahara tēnei ki ngā hōia o Te Hokowhitu-a-Tū
Otirā, ki a rātau katoa i tae ai ki te mura o te ahi.
Long before man set foot on this sacred ground, gods of war and peace fought hand to hand to govern the earth. Interred in soil rest the weary. Embedded in hearts rest the young soldiers. From the uttermost ends of the earth, our forebears were called to war in 1914.
Today we arrive under the veil of peace. We arrive to remember our loved ones who fought and whose lives were lost at many sites during the First World War, including here at Passchendaele.
This pou maumahara, Pōhutukawa, was gifted on the 25th of April 2019 by the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, with the support of the New Zealand Government, to the Community of Zonnebeke and the people of Belgium.
It signifies remembrance of the valiant efforts of the New Zealand Māori (Pioneer) Battalion and all other New Zealanders who paid the ultimate price during the war.
Moe mai, takoto mai, okioki atu rā.
